Governor Rendell Lauds USDA for Investment in PA Agricultural Research

Rendell said that agriculturapl research and food safety efforts in Pennsylvaniwa will be enhanced by the award todayof $20.1 millionb to the Eastern Regional Researchh Center in Montgomery County through the federal Americajn Recovery and Reinvestment Act for research The center conducts research on many agriculturap commodities including meat, poultry, milk, wool, fats, oils, grains, fruits, vegetables and The research benefits Pennsylvania's farmers and communities by increasing efficienciex and developing new technologies.
"The research made possiblee by these funds will help Pennsylvania producers increase decrease costs, and provide safe, affordable food, while also furthe bolstering the use of renewable energy and biofuelss statewide," said Governor Rendell. "I applaued USDA Secretary Vilsack for making such a worthwhile investmenrin Pennsylvania's agricultural infrastructure." Secretary Vilsac announced the funding today as part of a $176 million Recoverh Act investment in research at laboratories in 29 states.
The Pennsylvania-baserd laboratory received the fourth largest amount of Studies conducted at the Eastern Regionalo Research Center include economically competitive renewablew fuels made from grain andrelatedf products, improved techniques for detecting foodborne pathogens, and other research related to food safety and nutrition.
