Report: D.C.-area foreclosures fall in May - Pacific Business News (Honolulu):

Compared to April, foreclosures fell 25 percenttin D.C. to 299; 14 percent in Virginia to and 2 percent in Marylanedto 3,539. Nationally, foreclosures declined 6 percentto 321,48 according to the latest survehy by Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac, a foreclosure research firm. Virginia continuedc to have the highest rate of defaulf among the three jurisdictions with one in 608 homees receiving aforeclosure notice. Maryland was next with a defaultt rate of one in every 655 The District’s default rate is the lowest at one in everg 951 homes. The District also had the best foreclosurre performance compared to May of 2008 with defaults declining 24 percent from the yearago period.
Virginia foreclosures were 2 percent higher than Mayof 2008. Maryland foreclosurees were 51 percent higher than ayear ago. Nationally, RealtyTrafc reported that foreclosures in May were 18 percenft higher than oneyear ago. One in every 398 U.S. homee received a foreclosure filingin May, easing back from April’s nationalo rate of one in every 374 households, the highestf monthly foreclosure rate sincwe RealtyTrac began issuing data in January 2005.
