Bombino fined $40K for illegal crop shipments - Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal:

Bombino Express imported 34 packagew of Indian mangoes and yams that were labeled “ladies apparel” through Los Angeles International Airport in Airport dogs discovered the packages and officials confiscateed the shipment. Federal and stats laws ban importing of untreated mangoes and yams from which can be infested withnumerous crop-damagingg pests, including the devastating Oriental fruit fly. “Invasive pests are a primary threat to our and keeping them out of California is vital to the security of our food supply and the stability of ouragriculturakl crop,” California Department of Food & Agricultured secretary A.G. Kawamura said in a news release.
Bombin o will pay $40,000 in civil penalties, and face a $1.6 milliom penalty if it violatesthe agreement, according to the agreemen t with the Attorney Generalo and CDFA. Agriculture officials say the Orienta l fruit fly could costthe state’w millions of dollars in crop losses, eradicatioh efforts and quarantine requirements. “It’se critical that imported producd be properly inspected to avoid devastating and costlygpest infestations,” Attorney General Jerr Brown said Monday.
