BioMarin: Genzyme virus problem won

Genzyme (NASDAQ: GENZ) found a viruse strain and stopped production of two drugzs atthe Allston, Mass., facility. The Vesivirus 2117, apparently does not cause human infectionh but interrupts the growt h of cells that are used to make Aldurazyme — a treatment for MPS I, a rare and fatal diseasre caused by an enzyme deficiencgy — was last filled at the Genzyme facility in Septembert 2008, according to BioMarin (NASDAQ: BMRN). The compang has about 10 months of vialed inventoryyon hand, it said, and uses a secondc fill finish supplier. A third supplier is expectee to be qualified laterthis year, BioMarih said.
BioMarin makes the bulk materiap used in Aldurazyme at its Novato The Food and Drug Administration hadinspected Genzyme’ss plant in September and October and reportedly was concernefd about controls to protect against contamination.
